Module 2: Lecture & Study Guide
three major Sociological Perspectives and apply these to our own experience with education. Here are some key points to help you through the work:
Define Functionalism, Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interactionism
Functionalism (in a nutshell) sees society as an interconnecting series of parts (think about a clock and how the gears work together, the hands move etc.,…all for the outcome of showing the time). Think about education. Once you finish your degree, it could bring you to a new career path, bring about changes in your life etc.
Conflict Theory (in a nutshell) looks at the struggle for resources, power dynamics and inequality. Think about the Civil Rights Movement in the US. When people were being denied equal rights, we could easily apply Conflict Theory.
Symbolic Interactionism (in a nutshell) relates to the meaning we assign to our world. When you see a “Stop” sign (even without the words) you know you to stop. When you see a wedding ring, you know this means the person is likely married. This perspective is very subjective and expands out to many facets.
Assignment:
In Module 2, we are exploring the three major Sociological Perspectives: Functionalism, Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interactionism. For this discussion, begin by researching each of these. Next, share a video link (You Tube etc.), picture, or personal example that illustrates one of these theories. (For example, the film “Dangerous Minds” illustrates Conflict Theory).
The assignment you turn in will include:
-A video link (You Tube etc.), picture or personal account.
-Note which of the following it relates to and explain how it relates to it: Functionalism, Conflict Theory or Symbolic Interactionism
-A description of what motivated you to go to college (see my response)
(I decided to go to college because my parents instilled into me my entire life that if I did not get a degree I would not have a successful life. Now that I am in my twenties, I see my friends that have not furthered their education struggling without careers and good stable employment. Hence, it keeps me motivated to further my education. I want professional career growth.)
-An explanation of how you think Functionalism applies to education.
